Syllabus

The main element of the department`s syllabus is the general university course `History of the western literature` consisting of 6 parts:

  • Ancient literature;
  • Medieval and Renaissance literature;
  • History of the XVII-XVIII century literature;
  • History of the XIX century literature;
  • History of the western literature at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries;
  • History of the XX century literature.

The staff members have worked out some special courses:

  • Goethe and the problems of the world literature (V. A. Avetisyan, Doctor of Philology, Professor);
  • Introduction of the hermeneutics (A. V. Lashkevitch, Doctor of Philology, Professor);
  • The problems of the early French romanticism (S. N. Lubaretz, Candidate of Philology, Associate professor);
  • The traditional themes and motives: theoretical and historical aspects (N. K. Alexandrova, Candidate of Philology, Associate professor);
  • `Black humor` and the problems of postmodernism in the American literature (A. I. Lavrentyev, Candidate of Philology, senior teacher).

Research

  1. The department of foreign literature carries out research of the tendencies in the world literature development. This activity is represented in three major research branches: comparative studies (Doctor of Philology, Professor V. A. Avetisyan, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor N. K. Alexandrova, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor S. N. Lubaretz), hermeneutics (Doctor of Philology, Professor A. V. Lashkevitch), American studies (Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor I. V. Morozova).
  2. The department organized scientific conferences and published 5 collections of articles. An International Conference `Humanities on the Threshold of the the XXI Century` together with the University of Central Florida had been held in October 1997.
  3. `Goethe society in the Udmurt republic` resides in the department under the chairmanship of Professor V. A. Avetisyan. Through the activity of the society the department collaborates with other educational institutions. Thus, `Goethe Society` became a scientific and educational center for the teachers of German. A collection of articles with the participation of well-known German specialists `A great master of the word: Goethe and the problems of world literature` was published in 1999 in commemoration of the 250th Goethe`s anniversary.
  4. The department collaborates with scientific institutions in Moscow (MSU, RHSU, IML), St.-Petersburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Voronezh, etc.
  5. In 1990-s the department`s staff members were several times granted by international institutions (German and Austrian Academies of Science, DAAD, Humboldt`s fund, Volkswagen`s fund, Fulbright`s program).

The Department`s International Contacts

The department keeps relations with a wide range of international organizations. The department`s staff members take traineeship in the universities and the scientific centers of Austria, Germany, Great Britain and USA. The department keeps in touch with the Institution of Comparative Literary Studies in Munich University, International Goethe`s Society in Weimar, International Herder`s Society, the University of Central Florida.
