Department of physical geography together with the Department of social-economic geography train students in specialty 012500 `Geographer. Teacher of Geography`. Students study general disciplines:

• psychology,
• pedagogics,
• foreign languages
• a great number of courses on geography, both general - soil science, meteorology, hydrology, geography of population and regional - physical and social - economic world geography and geography of particular regions.

After the 1^st and 2^nd year students have field training in Votkinsk region, senior students have practical training connected with their choice of topics for course and diploma papers and pedagogical training as well.

Second-year students choose specialization on two departments - Department of physical geography and Department of social-economic geography. Specialization defines the choice of themes for course and diploma papers, thorough study of disciplines of corresponding directions of geography. Graduates of the Departments due to their fundamental geographic education work as geography teachers, work in project-prospecting and scientific research organizations, in nature resources usage organizations, in administrative bodies, in commerce and bank structures.

Department of Nature Resources Usage and Ecological Cartography

Head of the Department - Doctor of Geography, Professor Vladimir I. Sturman

Directions of research work:

• Assessment of ecological situations of territories and methods of ecological cartography
• Expert and prognostic assessment of ecological situations;
• Environmental and human health;
• Evolution of ecosystems.

Major 320100 `Nature resources usage` was founded in 1997 by the Decree of the Ministry of General and Professional Education of the Russian Federation ?457 of March 20, 1997. It is confirmed by the Decree of Goskomvuz of Russia ?180 of March 5, 1994.

Training on major `Nature resources usage` includes:

• general disciplines (higher mathematics, physics, chemistry, history, economics, foreign languages etc.);
• general geographical disciplines(geology, geomorphology, hydrology, meteorology, soil study, landscape study, physical and economic geography of Russia and foreign countries;
• general ecological disciplines (biology, ecology, geoecology and nature using, human ecology etc.);
• special professional disciplines( ecological setting, ecological monitoring, ecological analysis, nature protection technologies, nature protection legislation etc.).

Psychological-pedagogical disciplines are studied minimally. Pedagogical training is included in curriculum.

In accordance with the State Educational Standard professional activity of specialists in this area is aimed at complex study of branch, regional, national and global ecological problems, offering recommendations of how to solve them, guaranteeing ecological safety of national economy and other spheres of human activities, working out and using social economic and legal mechanisms of forming and realization of state ecological policy, planning of standard environmental protection actions, assessment of social-economic influence on environment, analysis of particular and general problems of using nature conditions and resources, management of nature resources usage.

Specialists can work at:

• departments of environmental protection and management of nature resources usage (central and regional departments of Ministry of Natural Resources and other departments of nature protection and local authorities);
• organizations, institutions and enterprises, which work is connected with technological aspects of environmental protection and ecological safety;
• projecting, prospecting and research institutes, offices, firms etc. of different forms of property
• In accordance with the State Educational Standard students study 5 years in case of full-time study (6 years in case of extra-mural study ) and get qualification `Ecologist. Nature- resources-user`.

Department of geodesy and geoinformatics

Directions of research work:

• Working out and introduction of GIS- technologies
• Digital cartography

Udmurt State University solely trains specialists in cartography in the Ural region. In 1992 major `Cartography` was opened and in 1993 Department of geodesy and geoinformatics was founded ( there are only 6 departments of this kind in Russia). Students get general geographical education, learn how to work with computer and modern electronic geodesic instruments, theory and methods of cartography, geodesy and geoinformatics, get practical knowledge of cartography - geodesic production, introduction and operation of geoinformational systems. Graduates in major `Cartography` work in the system of Roscartography (enterprises `Aerogeodesy`), Roskomzem (committees for land resources management and land usage ), Gosstroy (departments of architecture and town-planning), in municipal and regional administrative bodies, in research institutions. Demand for specialists of this orientation constantly increases.
